An in-Depth Exploration of the Evolution and Implementation of Halal Pharmaceutical Certification Schemes in Malaysia

Malaysia is a leader in halal pharmaceutical certification. With the global demand for halal pharmaceuticals on the rise, this study aims to shed light on the intricate process of designing and updating halal pharmaceutical certification schemes. The researcher chose a qualitative approach for this study. The research strategy included document selection and interviews for data collection. Nvivo 12 was used for the analysis and implementation of the study. The study indicates that Malaysia has gradually and systematically improved its halal certification scheme for pharmaceuticals. It started with certifying products in the traditional medicine and health supplement categories, moving on to over-the-counter products, and eventually to controlled medication products, carried out in stages. In line with this, for the purpose of enhancement, the implementation should also be guided by references to the Malaysian Standard MS 2424, Manual Procedure for Halal Certification in Malaysia, Malaysian Halal Management System, Halal Certification Circular, Malaysian Fatwa, as well as other laws and regulations.
