Brazilian Journalists’ New Media Arrangements: Journalism Made in the Periphery

This chapter presents initiatives by peripheral journalists in the city of São Paulo, the largest in Brazil. They are young people from the outskirts of the city, regions that are home to most of the population, who face a lack of access to public health and education services, which mirrors the prevailing inequality in the country, and who suffer from prejudices and stigmas, widely conveyed by the hegemonic media. These young people organize themselves into collectives, which we call new arrangements, with the aim of building journalism that combats the stereotypes conveyed by the media, giving voice to the people who inhabit these territories, and showing the complexities of the regions but also denouncing the lack of opportunities and access to public services. The chapter presents the concept of periphery and peripheral journalism, showing how some of the main initiatives are organized and how they build their journalism and their actions, which go beyond the journalistic content they propose to do.
