Emotional Education: Incorporating Emotional Labor Instruction into Journalism Training

Journalists across media frequently engage in emotional labor, suppressing or manipulating their emotions as part of the job at hand. However, our research indicates they rarely receive classroom education on how to handle such emotion work, nor information on the resources available to help journalists manage emotional trauma. Consequently, in this chapter, we discuss the repercussions of this alarming gap in journalism education and offer recommendations for how to incorporate emotion training into the journalism curriculum.
