Advancing Equity Through Engaging Communities to Address Measurement Disjuncture in Indigenous Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health

Infant and early childhood mental health is a foundational priority in Indigenous communities and embedded in ceremony, relational practices, and connectedness. Existing measures relevant to early childhood often fail to consider non-Western worldviews resulting in measurement disjunctures that undermine equity. The goals of this chapter are as follows: (1) describe measurement disjuncture and its impact on early childhood measurement in Indigenous communities, (2) propose a common language for measurement across a cultural continuum, (3) share examples across this continuum, and (4) share strategies to improve the field of measurement.
