Population Health Opportunities in Pediatrics to Support Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Promotion and Prevention: The HealthySteps Model

The pediatric primary care arena presents a unique opportunity to integrate the principles of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) into population health and reach a broad range of children and families. At present, the application of IECMH principles is scarce across disciplines. This chapter highlights the HealthySteps model, one that adapts the IECMH framework to the pediatric primary care setting by employing competencies aligned with the IECMH consultant work, and two principles of IECMH: promotion from a population health perspective and behavioral health prevention.
