Right Competency Validation

The Right Competency Validation for vascular access device (VAD) insertion includes an objective measurement of each domain of competency required to deem a clinician a qualified inserter. A qualified inserter is a “clinician who has undertaken a comprehensive clinical and vascular assessment and is applying the latest evidence and guidelines to select the most appropriate device for patient treatment, leading to successful insertion of a peripheral or a central VAD” (Alexandrou and Moureau, Vessel health and preservation: the right approach to access for vascular access. 3rd ed. Competency validation is performed at the conclusion of a VAD insertion training program using a standardized validation approach. The purpose is to validate the clinician’s ability to critically think, interact appropriately with patients, and independently place VADs per evidence-based guidelines. This chapter provides the framework for implementing the Right Competency Validation Process to ensure qualified VAD inserters deliver high-quality patient-centered care.
