Arterial catheters (ACs) allow for immediate adjustments in vasopressor therapies and blood specimen collection, and their use has been particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. The growing interest in utilizing ACs outside of critical care and prehospital settings highlights the need for a safe, dependable, and functional device. However, it is important to note that AC placement requires specialized training and experience, and the potential risks and complications associated with AC use should be carefully considered. Arterial catheters can be a valuable tool in the management of critically ill patients, but their use should be guided by appropriate training and protocols to minimize potential risks and optimize patient outcomes. Overall, the use of ultrasound guidance for radial artery catheterization can improve the safety and efficacy of the procedure, reduce the incidence of insertion-related complications, and enhance catheter functionality and dwell times. When performing this procedure, healthcare providers should consider the anatomic variations of the radial artery, select the appropriate insertion technique and catheter length, and carefully choose the insertion site. In addition, proper stabilization and securement of the catheter can further enhance its functionality and reduce the risk of mechanical complications. By considering these factors and utilizing ultrasound guidance, healthcare providers can optimize the use of radial artery catheters for critically ill patients.
