Right CICC and FICC

Intravascular catheters, particularly Centrally Inserted Central Catheters (CICCs) and Femorally Inserted Central Catheters (FICCs), are most frequently placed within the critical care or emergency departments and make up approximately 1/5 of all devices placed to administer intravenous patient therapies. There have been significant changes in the clinical practices for central venous catheter insertion, particularly with the rise in the use of ultrasound. As noted from previous research, advantages to the use of ultrasound alone improve patient and vessel assessment, improve procedural and safety aspects, and provide accurate confirmation of device tip positioning. Also, procedural efficiency (time to confirmation/use), reductions in ionizing radiation exposure, relocation of hospital equipment and resources, and cost, which, while all important aspects in procedural care, are beyond the scope of this work. Based on the compounding evidence from clinical studies, increasing medical and professional societies worldwide recommend the use of an ultrasound protocol for CICC/FICC placement.
