Vaginitis

Vaginitis is a common problem among adult women. Inflammation of the vagina caused by infectious or non-infectious agent(s) affects most of the women at least once in their lifetime. More than 70% of vaginitis is caused by vulvovaginal candidiasis, bacterial vaginitis, or trichomoniasis. Inexpensive and immediate diagnosis can usually be made by history, physical examination, and a vaginal specimen for pH and microscopy. If the initial evaluation yields a diagnosis, then treatment is directed. If the diagnosis is unclear, then sample is sent for NAAT or culture. Other non-infectious vaginitis includes atrophic, allergic, and inflammatory vaginitis, which can be treated depending on the underlying cause.
