摘要

Character is inherently paradoxical. While neither stable nor truly knowable, throughout the eighteenth century, authors and readers continually attempted to make character consistently legible. This chapter explores the paradoxes of character, and how these paradoxes shaped the presentation and proliferation of character during the period.
