Aesthetic Surgery for the Male Craniofacial Skeleton

There are both soft tissue and skeletal features of the face that have historically been associated with a male versus female appearance; these have been well-described anthropometrically and qualitatively. Facial features change over a person’s lifetime. Patients may seek aesthetic surgery to alter the balance of masculine/feminine characteristics, to improve disproportions or asymmetry, or to rejuvenate the face. This chapter discusses those facial skeletal structures that have historically been altered for aesthetic reasons. Pertinent points in clinical and radiographic examination are discussed. The chin is perhaps the skeletal structure of the face most commonly manipulated for aesthetic reasons, the osseous genioplasty is discussed in detail. Case examples of osseous genioplasty with personal tips are provided.
