A Caregiving Psychiatrist—Reconstructing the Clinical Fanon

  • Daniel José Gaztambide

摘要

This chapter examines Fanon’s clinical theory, practice, and attention to culture and context through his recently translated clinical papers and first-person accounts of his work as a practicing psychoanalytic therapist. Fanon cites and uses Freud, Ferenczi, and Lacan to develop a reconstruction of his approach to treatment. Of further note is Fanon’s attention to the psyche in the context of culture and language, his centering of the therapeutic relationship in the context of the broader systemic and institutional surround, and his conceptualization of the therapeutic process to address trauma and conflict by providing the patient with a new experience that helps them “relearn the meaning of freedom.” The chapter also explores the importance Fanon attached to adapting psychoanalytic ideas and interventions to the cultural context, and summarizes Fanon’s legacy in the history of psychoanalysis.
