Introduction

This chapter introduces in layman’s terms the two central concepts of the book: effective field theory and spontaneous symmetry breaking. The purpose is to set up the basic framework for the book and to underline its broad relevance. The introduction is followed by an outline of the contents of the book. This informs the reader of the hierarchical structure of the material and of the dependencies among the various parts. A list of basic references for further reading is appended.
