Locations of Manuscript Production

  • Cailah Jackson

摘要

This chapter addresses the cities, towns and institutions in which manuscripts were copied, collated and endowed, as revealed from manuscript inscriptions. The first part of the chapter discusses Konya, the Mevlevi heartland, and considers specific locations within the city where manuscripts were produced, such as the tomb-shrine of Jalal al-Din Rumi. The second part looks at other sites of manuscript production in Rum, such as Sivas, Tokat and Ladik (Denizli), as well as in other regions of the Islamic world, such as Mamluk Cairo and Muzaffarid Fars. This information gives us insights into the settings used to copy manuscripts and how the Mevlevis spread across the region in this early period.
