An Overview of Modern-Day Slavery and Human Trafficking

This chapter provides an overview of Modern-Day Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT). It deals with definitions, those most vulnerable to MSHT, and the size of the problem globally and in the UK. The vital role of healthcare professionals in recognising and combatting MSHT is highlighted along with the need for training in the area. The impact of MSHT on victims and the importance of National Referral Mechanisms (NRMs) for potential victims are discussed, along with First Responder organisations and the support that victims are afforded under NRM provision. The difficulties in communication with potential victims of MSHT are touched upon, as well as some of the signs of MSHT.
