First Steps in Petri Nets

This first chapter contains motivating and historical remarks, as well as some basic definitions, relating to Petri nets. These definitions are divided into structural ones, relating to the static structure of an unmarked Petri net, and behavioural ones, relating to the dynamic structure of a marked Petri net. Not only this chapter, but also this text as a whole, is concerned with place / transition nets, one of the oldest and most basic Petri net models.
