Methodological Aspects of Educational Internet of Things

This chapter discusses the Internet of Things (IoT). There are many announcements regarding this technology to support education, especially for administrative tasks in both university and K-12 settings. The education sector is highly interested in this field due to the new capabilities of this technology. The role of IoT in sustainable education is understood well; however, we still know little about how to deliver the IoT as teaching content at the K-12 level. This chapter therefore presents general methodological aspects for introducing the IoT into STEM-driven CS education. The essential contribution of this chapter is a systemic analysis of the IoT as a problem domain through conceptual modelling. To do that, we first formulated the research strategy, aim, and requirements. Then, we have defined the basic terms and relationships through their properties, thus giving a conceptual understanding (model) of this domain. In addition, this model sheds some light on the relationship of IoT with other Big Concepts (DS and AI).
