Fenton-Related Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for Water Treatment

Nowadays, toxic/persistent organic micropollutants generated from different human activities contaminate natural water streams since conventional water and wastewaterWastewater treatment plants remain inefficient to eliminate these pollutants. Alternatively, advanced oxidationAdvanced oxidation processes (AOPs)Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) constitute an efficient and environment friendly techniques to remove these pollutants from water and wastewaterWastewater effluents. These processes are based on in situ generation of strong oxidants, like hydroxyl radicalsHydroxyl radical, that are able to oxidize organic pollutantsOrganic pollutants up to their mineralizationMineralization. The Fenton processFenton process, which is based on the Fenton’s reagentFenton’s reagent (a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous iron), is one of the first AOPsAdvanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). To enhance the efficiency of the Fenton processFenton process, several improvements have been achieved in recent years. This chapter focuses on the fundamental characteristics of this process and overviews Fenton-based processes such as photo-FentonPhoto-Fenton, electro-FentonElectro-Fenton, and related processes as well as anodic FentonAnodic Fenton and Fered-FentonFered Fenton processesFenton process, including their application to the treatment of contaminated waters.
