Can Government Influence What We Eat?
摘要
A range of approaches taken by government to encourage a healthy diet are reviewed. The problems with the American pyramid are considered. There is little evidence that banning television advertising to children has an influence on obesity. Placing calories on restaurant menus makes little difference. The nutritional information on packaging has little effect. In summary there is little evidence that government initiatives have had a significant impact on calorie consumption. It is discussed whether there is a role for government, as opposed to the individual, in deciding what is to be eaten. Should there be a nanny state?
