IoT in Stormwater Management

  • Abdul Salam

摘要

Wireless communication, combined with low-power sensing, is the backbone of the smart cities. With increasing urbanization, climate change, and aging infrastructure, there is a dire need of an effective water management and wastewater management in smart cities. Some of the current challenges, due to ineffective water management, include floods and pollutants in stormwater. Moreover, there are infrastructure challenges such as aging dedicated gray infrastructure, i.e., pipes, basins, and wetlands, etc., and bacteria and viruses due to overflow of stormwater exceeding stormwater tank capacity. These challenges, if not addressed promptly, will aggravate with the passage of time. Engineers have tried to expand the Gray infrastructure; however, it is not time- and cost-efficient. Moreover, overflow from individual stormwater facilities may combine together to produce even disastrous downstream flows. Therefore, expansion, without any regulation, may result in flooding, erosion, and degraded water quality. In this chapter, an IoT in Stormwater Management is proposed as an alternative technology for smart infrastructure that can address these challenges.
