After defining ‘Acquired motor speech disorders’ (AMSD) as a wide group of speech disorders due to impairment of motor planning, motor programming and neuromuscular control (execution) of speech, epidemiological data are presented related to the different causes of dysarthria and apraxia. Attempts to develop a classification of dysarthria are discussed. Aetiological aspects are explained, pathogenetic findings are related to the different types of dysarthria, also considering apraxia of speech.
