Three-Dimensional Model of Wind Turbine NREL-Monopile 5 MW for Vibration Characterisation

The development of wind energy is a key solution in the field of environmental protection by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and limiting changes taking place in ecosystems. In this context, the development of onshore and offshore wind farms is important. In the article the 5 MW wind turbine developed by National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) is the subject of the research. A 3D-Timoshenko beam element coupled to a lumped mass is used in the wind turbine model. The results investigate various modal properties and mode-coupling instability in the WT vibrations, essential information for the turbine’s monitoring and control. The receptance frequency response function (FRF) comparison between 2D Spectral Element Method (SEM) and 3D Finite Element Model (FEM) with excitement at the wind turbine top is investigated.
