The network of planned new towns in the tropical northern Paraná state, Brazil, shows a rather surprising functional coexistence between human occupation and environmental flows, a current pressing concern in urban planning and design. Stemming from an overseas speculative enterprise conducted on privately owned land and oriented by machine-age reasoning, the urban network originally depicted organic urban grids positioned on the main ridges, as well as the regular parceling of rural areas along natural lines. Despite the massive deforestation that took place for agricultural purposes, this venture created a regional landscape based on the garden city model, which has led to an amicable relationship between built-up areas and the natural environment. This chapter explores the historical events behind the establishment of that urban network and its relationship with natural resources, so as to trace the formation and evolution of green patches and green corridors, not only in the countryside but also within cities. Thus, the potentialities of connected green spaces in these urban forms will be addressed, since they are known to affect the quantity and quality of animal species that inhabit urban spaces.
