Urban Biological Evolution in Tropical Cities

In the last decade, urban evolution has gained relevance by showing that in few generations evolutionary changes can occur in organisms living in cities. Despite the ample evidence showing that ecology and evolution operate in different ways in temperate and tropical latitudes, most of the urban evolution studies have been conducted in temperate cities. Here, we review arguments that support that such strong biogeographic bias is constraining our understanding and capacity to achieve broader inferences across latitudes on the effects of the worldwide urban ecosystem expansion on the evolutionary process. We also highlight that despite plants, and its ecological interactions, have played a key role in developing ecological and (co)evolutionary theory, there are relative few urban evolution studies on plants in contrast with those focusing on animals. Based on this bias and the lack of studies in the tropics, we review plant-mutualistic and antagonistic interactions and latitudinal patterns to suggest how plant-ecological interactions can evolve in tropical cities. While it has been suggested that urban biological evolution can play a key role to design sustainable and resilient cities, it can be challenging or unfruitful to apply standardized strategies in developed countries to a socio-eco-evolutionary context not yet studied. We need to put tropical urban evolution on the map.
