A MIMO Dual-Mode Homogenous OFDM IM System for Next-Generation Communications

In this research, we proposed a novel multiple-input multiple-output dual-mode homogenous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (MIMO DMH OFDM IM) system for improving the spectral efficiency of the existing MIMO OFDM and MIMO OFDM IM systems. The proposed multicarrier communication system is developed by combining DMH OFDM IM technique with MIMO system. In the proposed DMH system, along with subcarrier indices, data or information is also transmitted by using in-phase and the quadrature-phase of the modulated signals. The proposed multicarrier communication system performance is validated using computer simulations and compared with the available classical MIMO OFDM and OFDM IM systems. The main idea in dual mode index modulation is varying the number of active subcarriers in both in-phase and quadrature-phase of subcarriers in conventional OFDM IM systems. Hence, the proposed MIMO DMH OFDM IM system achieves a data rate twice that of the existing MIMO OFDM IM systems, significantly higher than the classical MIMO OFDM systems. Hence, the proposed system is suitable for next-generation communications systems. The bit error rate (BER) and throughput analysis are presented to verify the performance of the developed system. The proposed system achieves lower BER and higher throughput in contrast to existing MIMO OFDM and MIMO OFDM IM systems.
