Digitally Assisted, Screen-Based Vitreoretinal Surgery

Digitally-Assisted-Screen-Based-Vitreoretinal Surgery (DSVS) is an emerging paradigm for enhanced visualization during vitreoretinal procedures. This chapter explores the transition from traditional microscope-based surgery to DSVS, outlining the technological prerequisites, advantages, and clinical implications. The use of digital optimization to enhance desired structure and the ability to operate at a high magnification without degrading the resolution are important advantages of this technology especially when performing macular surgery. DSVS offers improved ergonomics, high dynamic range surgery, real-time digital signal processing, and champions surgical teaching and observation opportunities. While certain disadvantages, including initial equipment costs and latency, exist, the benefits of DSVS outweigh these drawbacks. The author provides practical insights into adopting DSVS, surgical tips, and emphasizes its potential for revolutionizing vitreoretinal surgery in the digital age.
