Linear Analysis Methods to Characterize Inherent Small-Signal Behavior of the Plant and Overall Power System

Power systems are inevitably subject to small disturbances, and as such, small-signal stability analysis methods can be applied to gain insights into the associated instability phenomena. For a power system to operate normally, it must first be stable in terms of small-signal stability. Power system small-signal stability is influenced by several factors, including initial operating conditions, the level of damping available, and the characteristics of control devices. If power system oscillations caused by small disturbances can be sufficiently suppressed, the power system can return to a stable operating condition. Conversely, if the magnitude of oscillations continues to increase or is indefinitely sustained, the power system will go into an unstable mode of operation.
