Improving Case Creation Robustness Using Optimisation and Standardisation Techniques

The evolution of the power system requires an evolution of the tools and techniques used for dynamic analysis of the network. A critical part of power system dynamic analysis is the pre-disturbance operating point at which the dynamic stability of the system is studied. However, due to variation and uncertainty in inverter-based resource (IBR) output, changes in this operating point can have an impact on the analysis being carried out. Since it is not possible to carry out an assessment on thousands of operating points, some form of clustering and probabilistic analysis is required to identify representative operating points. Such an approach can be further complemented using various optimization techniques to identify relevant and appropriate scenarios to be studied while also trying to ensure that the evaluated operating point is stable and reliable. More efficient and accurate decision-making requires accurate models and advanced optimization functions for planning and operation and at different levels. These optimization functions are often very computationally expensive and therefore require new optimization methods that leverage both deep insights into specific power system problems as well as advanced optimization solvers.
