Changing Power Systems and Impact on Power System Dynamic Phenomena and Analysis Methods

The transition to electric power systems that support a clean energy future requires a thorough understanding of increasingly complex interactions between conventional generation, network equipment, variable renewable generation technologies (centralized and distributed), and demand response. The phenomena pertaining to such a power system differ from the well-understood phenomena in a conventional power system with a dominant share of large, centralized synchronous generators. One of the most complex, prevalent, and less-understood phenomena are power system dynamics and stability. Secure and reliable power system planning and operation require a thorough understanding of different forms of system stability and their causes, consequences, and mitigation measures. Lessons learned from several black system events and system instabilities across the world indicate that these occurrences could have been avoided or their consequences made much less severe if they were understood and addressed before they occurred in practice.
