Surgery remains the standard of care for patients with primary renal cell carcinoma, which has classically been considered radio-resistant; however, there is growing evidence that stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) with high dose per fraction can likely overcome the previously described radio-resistance. To date, clinical experience is limited to mostly retrospective series that have demonstrated promising outcomes. Published series have used many different dosing regimens but suggest that high doses per fraction using SBRT can provide excellent local control for appropriately selected patients who cannot undergo surgery.
