Categorizing the Rainbow

The author explores how cultural beliefs affect the categorization of natural phenomena like rainbows. Different cultures have varying numbers of rainbows, their order denoted by the Latin word spectrum. While the Bible presents rainbows as a divine promise without specifying color count, people create their own color systems. Cultural anthropology reveals diverse color categorizations across societies, with some acknowledging three to four rainbow colors while others identify over seven. Ancient Greece introduced sound‒color correlation, later linked to Newton's seven-color rainbow scale. Advances have revealed Fraunhofer lines, dividing rainbows into fine lines. This chapter also focuses on the Rainbow Flag, a symbol of LGBTQ+ movements around the world, which initially featured eight colors but now has only six due to production issues. The flag represents diversity and unity within the LGBTQ+ community. With 18 genders, Thailand is an example of progressive gender acceptance, allowing individuals to express their preferred identities freely.
