This chapter presents the importance of tolerances in machine design and a brief history of the development of dimensional and geometric tolerances. A comparison of dimensional versus geometric tolerances highlights the advantages of practicing geometric tolerancing. The chapter also highlights the importance of creating professional-looking drawings and presents the rules and preferred practices using feature-based dimensioning.
