Industrial Evolution Toward the Age of Imagination

This chapter briefly describes transitions within the industrial age: from the first, second, and third industrial revolutions, to the current Industry 4.0 and the upcoming and well anticipated Industry 5.0. It also discusses the transition to the so-called Information Age and Imagination Age, with the proliferation of powerful generative Artificial Intelligence technologies. This chapter also discusses the challenges and responsibilities that arise with the introduction and usage of new digitalization technologies and their impact on industry, including changes in jobs, wages, and talents. In short, this chapter attempts to answer the following questions: How did we reach the fourth industrial revolution? How are we headed to the fifth industrial revolution? What are the prominent digitalization and smart technologies that have stimulated this evolution?
