Use of DIA for Tracing the Geologic Origin of Two Marine Calcareous Sands

The morphologyMorphology of two types of complex calcareousCalcareous sand was investigated using Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) in order to demonstrate that sedimentsSediment source tracingTrace information could be inferred from particle shape analysis. Both sands were acquired from offshoreOffshore AustraliaAustralia. The first sand, called Ledge Point, is a bioclasticBioclastic coastalCoastal sand, while the second, called BrowseBrowse #1Quartz #1, is a hemipelagicHemipelagic sand. The two sands are representative of different geologiesGeology; the first is representative of a calcareousCalcareous coastalCoastal site, while the second was obtained from a deep-sea site. The materials were selected due to their different geologicGeologic and biologicBiological originsOrigin. In addition, these two sands fall outside the rangeRange of common datasetsDataset used to correlateCorrelate mechanicalMechanical properties to particle shape parameters. Thus, morphologicMorphology analysis of these calcareousCalcareous sedimentsSediment can aid with understanding the engineering behavior of calcareousCalcareous soils.
