Comparison of 2D and 3D DIA

In recent years, both 2D and 3D Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) have been applied for characterizingCharacterisation particle granulometryGranulometry. Both systems employ a high-speed cameraCamera to capture images of particles falling through an illuminatedIllumination imaging plane. However, although 2D and 3D DIA devices employ similar technologies they differ in resolutionResolution, frame rateFrame rate, lightingLight systems, and algorithmsAlgorithm. Conventional 2D DIA captures one image of a particle from a randomRandom plane, while in 3D DIA the system tracksTrack a particle and captures images from 8–12 perspectivesPerspective. This chapter compares the performance of 2D and 3D DIA, in particular for particle size distributionsParticle size distribution (PSD) and particle shape analysis.
