The use of the “n-word” is quite prevalent today on playgrounds, in schools, in rap music, and in pop culture. Many students, parents, teachers, school principals, administrators, and community agencies are grappling with its use and how it should be addressed, especially in schools that are publicly funded. This chapter examines the genesis and history, the multiple uses of the “n-word by different ethnic groups,” the intergenerational trauma it has had on individuals who identify as Black or of African descent, how the Canadian law treats the use of the “n-word,” and how to address the use of the “n-word” in practical, responsible ways.
