Educators’ Preparedness to Engage in Practices That Support Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice
摘要
Existing issues of racism and anti-immigration, exacerbated by the pandemic, the murder of George Floyd and the upsurge of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, as well as the surge of Anti-Asian Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate, made visible the inadequacies of knowledge on issues concerning racism, discrimination, immigration, gender, and sexual orientation. Of particular importance is teachers, principals, and administrators’ preparedness to critically engage with these issues in their classrooms and school districts. This chapter discusses participants understandings of contemporary social justice issues, their growth and development in understanding critical perspectives based on a professional development course developed to engage teachers, educators, administrators, undergraduate, and the general community on critical approaches to topics of race, immigration, English learners/emerging bilinguals, gender, and sexual orientation. Focusing on their post-course survey responses, a case is made for the importance of centering critical theory earlier in the educational process, especially with preservice teachers. By this, the chapter will address what changes are needed in education to advance anti-discriminatory education towards equity and social justice.
