Sign Language Machine Translation Communication and Engagement

Historically, sign language technologies have been developed by hearing scientists without input from deaf experts or community representatives. Science communication can offer perspectives on the relationship between science and sign languages, and tools to support deaf leadership and deaf community participation in sign language technology research. However, this is a largely neglected space in the science communication literature. Here, we look at examples of deaf-led science communication practice, and we explore methods for effective and inclusive engagement. We focus on SignON, a European consortium researching and developing technologies for sign language machine translation. We present findings from a focus group conducted with deaf and hard of hearing experts, highlighting the importance of transparency and dialogue in such projects, and exploring the roles and responsibilities of hearing scientists in the process.
