How to Avoid Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) Recurrence

Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC)Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) represents 3–11% of odontogenic cysts. It is well documented that these lesions are aggressive and have a high recurrence rate, which is reported to be between 5 and 62%. There are currently three accepted surgical treatments for OKC (marsupialization or decompression, enucleation, and en-bloc resection) as well as several adjunctive therapies (peripheral ostectomyPeripheral ostectomy, application of Carnoy’s solution, modified Carnoy’s solution, liquid nitrogen, and 5% fluorouracil (5-FU)) that might be utilized in combination with the surgical modalities. The purpose of this chapter is to review the most commonly used methods to help in minimizing OKC recurrence.
