Symptomatic Internal Carotid Artery Web Treated with a CGuard MicroNET-Covered Stent in a Young Female Patient with Left Frontal Ischemic Stroke; Good Acute and Mid-Term Follow-Up Results

“Carotid artery web” (CW) is defined as a focal fibromuscular dysplasia, an abnormal shelf-like aggregation of intimal fibrous tissue at the carotid bulb in the posterior wall, and is recognized as a cause of cryptogenic and recurrent stroke events in young patients without significant cardiovascular risk factors. Secondary stroke prevention measures for carotid artery disease include medication, carotid endarterectomy, and carotid stenting. Medicinal treatment alone is associated with stroke recurrence in approximately 30% of cases. No peri- or post-procedural stroke has been reported with interventional secondary stroke prevention. We describe a representative case of a young female patient without cardiovascular risk factors with a history of a frontal ischemic stroke related to an ipsilateral carotid artery web, who was treated with a dual mesh carotid stent with a good angiographic and clinical outcome. The treatment of symptomatic carotid webs is the main topic of this chapter.
