Prosthetic Treatment of Partially Edentulous Maxillofacial Defect Patients

Maxillofacial defects may occur due to congenital or developmental anomalies or secondary to acquired conditions such as trauma or surgery. For a patient with a maxillofacial defect, getting the lost function, phonation, and aesthetics back is of great importance in terms of quality of life. The prosthetic treatment of these defects has always been a challenging approach and removable prostheses that replace the lost tissues quickly, cost-effectively, and with minimum trauma have always been a referred treatment approach in maxillofacial defects where there is loss of bone, soft tissue, and adjacent structures. The process of a prosthodontic treatment from the planning to the delivery should include all the principles that need to be carefully considered. The deterioration of the healthy structure necessitates some changes in the conventional biomechanical rules of partial removable dentures. Therefore, a maxillofacial prosthesis based on a well-designed foundation not only restores the lost function and aesthetics but also provides a significant effect on the well-being of the patient.
