Reestablishing Occlusal Vertical Dimension and Maximal Intercuspal Position in Partially Edentulous Patients

  • Olcay Şakar

摘要

Reestablishing occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) and maximal intercuspal position (MIP) may be required in partially edentulous patients with decreased OVD. Also, it may be sometimes necessary to increase the OVD to gain sufficient space for a prosthetic restoration in patients without loss of OVD. Studies have shown that reestablishing the OVD can be successfully performed when an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan is accomplished. What are the main reasons for decreased OVD? Which methods can be used to reestablish OVD and MIP? How much can OVD be increased? Are there any limitations and/or contraindications? How long is the period of adaptation and which control methods are used in this period? What is the role of overlay removable partial dentures and what are the issues to be considered in the laboratory and clinical procedures during the prosthetic treatment? This chapter will clarify all the above-mentioned questions and be a guide that can be used not only in cases of partial edentulism but also in all cases requiring OVD and MIP reestablishment.
