摘要

Overweight and obesity are global challenges to populations and healthcare systems. At the organismal level, an excessive BMI may cause systemic impairments including metabolic disorders, damage to gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems as well as to periodontal health with evident reciprocal interrelationships. Contextually, oral hygiene and treatment of periodontal diseases with multi-professional expertise are pivotal for primary and secondary care provided to overweight patient cohorts. In this chapter, we present clear evidence towards predictive, preventive, and personalized medical services strongly recommended to meet individual needs of overweight individuals diagnosed with metabolic disease. Our investigations summarized here demonstrate that professional periodontal care is pivotal for the complex medical services including health risk assessment, predictive and psychologic approach, multi-factorial prevention of modifiable risk factors and treatment algorithms tailored to personalized patient profiles.
