GIS-Based Model Assessing Sustainable Pedestrian Accessibility to Mosques

With the acceleration of urbanization, cities are expanding, distances are increasing, travel times are lengthening, motorization is growing, and populations are continually increasing. To tackle this challenge, new urban strategies aim to manage the correlation amid urban design and mobility and redefine proximity to decrease dependence on energy-depleting and contaminating means of transportation, such as vehicles. The “cities at 15-min” model reflects this transformation, prioritizing the accessibility of services and urban areas within a 15-min walking distance from people’s homes. In this regard, the article suggests a GIS-based model to assess pedestrian access to mosques. The method combines evaluating distances and walking lengths juxtaposed with the capacity of the mosques to accommodate individuals and the population in their areas of influence to measure spatial and functional access to mosques. This method can help urban planners understand urban configurations in terms of pedestrian access, promoting more equitable and inclusive cities.
