Classification and Characterization

PetroleumPetroleum crude oils are broadly classified as paraffinic, naphthenic/asphalticAsphaltic, and mixed. ParaffinicParaffinic crude oils are composed largely of aliphaticAliphatic hydrocarbons (paraffins), waxWax (long-chain normal paraffin), and high-grade oils. They also contain lesser amounts of naphthenic and asphaltic (bituminous) material. Traditional examples are Pennsylvania grade crude oils. Relative to other hydrocarbons, at a given temperature and pressure, normal paraffins have a greater tendency to precipitate.
