Entangled Office Space

  • Karen Messer

摘要

Entangled Office Space begins by situating office space research within the current socio-material trends taking place across the social sciences. Considering how space is positioned within organizational research, I explore what is needed to engage with the entangled nature of the socio-material office environment. As office space becomes part of our homes, in cafes and on Zoom, understanding how we live with and are affected by these spaces becomes even more apparent. This ontological discussion presents space as living, porous, and embedded in day-to-day experience. Questions such as: “What happens when we see space as a co-creator in an organization’s evolution?” and “How can our perception of physical space contribute to how we move forward as organizational researchers—not simply in terms of office design but how we understand the relationship between people and space?” frame the discussion. With forays into the repercussions of technology on research and as well as recent advances in sensory, emplaced, and aesthetic research, this chapter grounds the ensuing exploration.
