Analysis of the Time Multiplexed Sampling and a Proposed Prototype for Effective Heterogenous Data Acquisition Systems

Heterogenous analog inputs cause conflict in data acquisition systems named recently as the Same-Time-Sampling conflict. This paper proposes an algorithm, namely the Heterogenous Time Multiplexed Sampling (HTMS), which allows a single multiplexed analog to digital converter to effectively sample a heterogeneous set of signals at different sampling rates is proposed. The HTMS algorithm provides a computed schedule to a single multiplexed analog to digital converter with heterogeneous sets of input signals an advantage over conventional sampling methodologies by increasing hardware capability and reducing the amount of redundant data acquired by optimizing the sample rate to the input signal. The reduction in redundant data reduces the amount of processing power required in computing systems, particularly embedded systems. to, and design a prototype to test its effectiveness. Synthetic signals with different frequencies are provided to study the effectiveness of the prototype to resolve the Simultaneous-Time-Sampling conflict in multi-channel heterogenous data acquisition systems. A prototype implementing HTMS is presented to test the algorithm and compare to current commercial counterparts. Results show that, given a heterogeneous set of input signals, the proposed system yield less redundant data and can likely sample more signals than conventional round-robin based systems.
