Towards an Action Plan to Improve the Role of Perforated Building Envelopes in Sustainable Design

As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, sustainable building practices have emerged as a critical component of efforts to lessen buildings’ environmental impact. One aspect of sustainable building design that has gained significant attention is the use of perforated building envelopes. Perforated building envelopes aim to promote natural ventilation, daylighting, and energy efficiency while still maintaining the building’s structural integrity. This research paper aims to investigate the role of perforated building envelopes in achieving sustainable buildings, exploring their historical evolution, benefits, and design considerations. This paper provides valuable insights into how sustainable building practices can be effectively integrated into the design process by developing an action plan for successfully implementing sustainable perforated building envelopes to improve indoor environmental quality, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency.
