Ventilation Systems for Efficient Energy Use

For a healthy indoor environment, proper ventilation is essential. It helps remove both the excess heat and moisture content which causes heat stress negatively affecting the living and working environment. In addition, supplying fresh air from outside allows removing the pollutants and odours which improves air indoor quality. However, to achieve that, high energy consumption levels may be required, especially if the system involves mechanical parts that need electrical power to be driven. This paper introduces a review of different types of ventilation systems with their classifications for efficient energy use in buildings. Also, the working criteria and detailed description of each system are covered. This review shows that integrating renewable energy resources for air ventilation has a promising future to achieve energy efficiency in sustainable buildings. Moreover, it suggests that combining one or two renewable energy resources would be even more competent, especially at low wind speeds scenarios. The reason for this is that this integration generates constant airflow and offers homogenous heat distribution. This paper directly pertains to the Sustainable Development Goal of affordable and clean energy. It outlines the development of energy-efficient ventilation systems designed to reduce the energy costs and associated carbon emissions involved in heating, cooling, and ventilating buildings.
