Reguera and Rubi Kinetic Equation

This chapter is devoted to the in-depth study of the mesoscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamics theory in the presence of entropic barriers, as well as its application to diffusion under geometrical constraints. Starting with well-established concepts of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, the so-called kinetic equation proposed by Reguera and Rubi was found. As it turns out, this expression is a generalization of the Smoluchowski equation for when we have not only an entropic, but also an energetic potential, and it even includes a non-constant diffusion coefficient
